lil wayne billboard magazine front cover analysis

This hip hop magazine targets a wide audience, both male and female as both may be interested in hip hop music, women would also be sexually attracted to the cover image, whereas men may aspire to be that figure. The magazine may also target people of the same ethnic origin to the model (Lil Wayne) as they can relate to him. The main image on the front cover is Lil Wayne, a well knows hip hop artists.
The overall image of the front cover is very dark, this makes the audience feel curious and want to buy the magazine to know more. In this image Lil Wayne is also shown to be dark and mysterious because he is wearing sun glasses and emotion is shown in the eyes, which the audience cannot see. Dark colours also connotes wealth and sophistication as he is very successful artist. The image relates to the music genre as Lil Wayne raps and produces hip hop music, but also because he is wearing braids, and many hip hop artists rap about this and their ethical background. A lot of hip hop songs have lyrics about violence, thus the red studded belt around his neck. The colour red also connotes anger due to his violent lyrics. Lil Wayne is also showing the top half of his body to suggest rebellion, due to his tattoos. The music artist is topless which may attract both men and women. Men may aspire to be of this figure, whereas women may be sexually attracted to it.

The magazine is called 'Billboard', which is known as a large poster with the latest advertisements, emphasising that the magazine consists of the latest music, making the reader aware of the latest music and top 100 tunes and what the magazines about. The font of the mast head is simple due to the bright white colour used for it to grab attention, but also the other fronts for straplines are also of vibrant red colours as it matched the theme and this follows conventions. the size of the masthead is of a typical size takes up all of the top of the magazine to show its importance because it reflects the content. The fact that image of the artist is centered and over the masthead suggests he is of great importance as he represents the content of the magazine.
